Gopashtami

Gopashtami is celebrated on the 8th day of Kartika month during the Shukla Paksha. It is a wonderful festival dedicated to worship and offer prayers to the cows(gau mata) Indra, in order to show his powers and make people worship him created massive rain.

Thus Krishna, to help the people of Vrindavan lifted Govardhana parvat to give shelter to all. Thus on eight-day Indra realized his mistake and stops the rain.

He sought forgiveness from Shri Krishna. Surbhi cow showered milk on Indra and Krishna and declared Krishna as Govinda who is meant to be the Deva of cows. Though it was the eighth day which is called Ashtami, that particular day is celebrated as Gopashtami.
