Suchindram Temple/ Thanumalayan Temple. (Temple Story)
Suchindram Temple/ Thanumalayan Temple in Suchindram district of Kanyakumari. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vishnu & Brahma. Also called Sthanumalayan Perumal Temple. The deity, Sri Sthanumalayan represents Sthanu(Lord Shiva), Mal (Lord Vishnu), and Aya (Lord Brahma). The shrine of Lord Vishnu has been made by combining eight different kinds of metals. On the right side, there is a shrine of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, while on the left side is the shrine of Lord Ganesha. On the front, there is Navagraha mandapa.
Sthala Purana tells Indra got relieved of a curse at the place of the main linga in the temple. The term "Suchi" in Suchindrum means "purify". Accordingly, Indra is supposed to visit the temple for performing pooja at midnight every day. Another story is about Sage Atri and his wife Anasuya. Sage Anasuya was highly devoted to her husband. So, Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma wanted to test her. They came to the sage's hermitage as Brahmins. Anasuya treated them with the utmost care. The Brahmins put forth a condition that they would accept her hospitality with a condition that she would come out nude. With her power, she converted the thrimoorthy's to small kids and served them with her breast milk. Atri returned to Ahram with Parvathy, Lakshmi & Saraswati. Anasuya restored the kids to their original form. The trimoorthy blessed the couple for their devotion. The three lords stayed in the form of Lingas and the place where the couple worshiped the Trinity is believed to be the temple.
The massive idol of Lord Hanuman at a height of 18 feet is also very important here. Anjaneya murti of this temple standing with his hands folded shows us that he is showing Viswaroopam to Sita Mata. His standing posture is slightly delicate out of modesty. This indicates that He is standing in front of Sita Mata showing his Viswaroopa with the power of Rama Nama.
